In 1974, Norio Suzuki travels to the Philippine island of Lubang in search of the remaining Japanese soldier Hiro Onoda, who has been declared legally dead since 1959.

 

He found Onoda in his tattered uniform, still at war, waiting for the Japanese army to return. Onoda stubbornly refused to accept that the war was over, and Norio Suzuki was forced to return to the island accompanied by Onoda's former commander, Major Taniguchi, to obtain his surrender.
