On Christmas Eve 1950, after the construction of the dam on La Maulde, the impoundment of Lac de Vassivière swallowed up eight deserted villages and hamlets.

The photographies were taken in the summer of 1995, when the lake was last emptied, and show the rubble of the former villages, now once again under water.

The sound was recorded in 2017 at various points along the shoreline, and engraved by hand on a Plexiglas plate. The nail running through the grooves is amplified by a microphone, adding its sound to those of the lake.
